Air Motors

General Description of Air Motors:

San Air Tools air motors are of the vane motor type. Usually vane motors are coupled with a planetary gear box. The planetary gear box has been custom made to suit input speeds. Planetary gear boxes are provided to reduce output speeds and increase torque. Vane motors, a subset of the widely known category of air motors are also known as pneumatic stirrers in some industry sectors.

Principle of Operation:
A compression chamber is enclosed by a cylinder (known as a stator) with two plates at its extremes. The rotor is enclosed and placed eccentrically in this enclosed space. This shape of the space between the stator and the rotor is like a croissant. The rotor has slots cut in which the vanes will move free. When the rotor is turning, the vane will stick on the internal face of the stator, dividing this space in several compression chambers with different volumes. The vanes of the rotor move up and down due to the centrifugal force. To provide this centrifugal force it is generally recommended to operate air motors above 2 bar pressure to help the vanes from pressure chambers.
The rotor is further coupled to a planetary gear box to provide the required torque and speed. The shaft is either threaded, provided with a keyway or a flat for impeller attachment. Non-geared vane motors could be coupled to a spur or a planetary gear box.

Advantages:
Air motor has several advantages over electric motors.

1.Setting up of an air (pneumatic) motor is easy and does not require electricity. The same applies for maintenance operations.

2.Air (pneumatic) motors do not require any sophisticated piloting systems. Torque or rotational speed can be managed easily with a simple system (air flow and/or pressure modulation system).

3.The output power / weight of an air (pneumatic) motor is 5 to 6 times superior to that of an electric motor. Therefore, the air motor is ideal in portable applications and/or in areas whereby space is limited.

4.Even upon reaching high frequency torque, the air motor does not heat up and get damage. The stall torque can be used to get specific tightening torque.

5.The air motor is cooled permanently by injected air. This helps to avoid overheating even at high speed.

Preventive Maintenance of Air Motors:

1) Use clean dry air
2) Install filter-regulator-lubricator units
3) Avoid Storing in muddy environments
4) Use spindle oil Spintex-35 before & after use
5) Recommended air line pressure 6 kg/cm2
6) Disconnect air line from the tool before connecting drill bits grinding points or other attachments.
